I went on a hike near the end of November in search of something to embroider for my phenology wheel. Nothing was standing out as a clear winner. I thought about maybe a mushroom or some ferns? At the end of the hike, I decided to take a little detour down closer to the river, and I’m sure glad I did. These yellow flowers were in full bloom all over the place!

I’ve identified them as Hooker’s Evening Primrose (kind of a funny name if you’re immature like me. Haha!) At first I thought they were blooming out of season since it’s been a pretty warm fall here, but they do bloom in fall. I think they are blooming a little later than normal, but probably because we haven’t had a good frost yet. My roses are still blooming too. Anyway, they are an evening primrose because they close up during the day and bloom in the evening. Isn’t that cool?!

Here’s my take on them. I wish I had used a little more of the darker yellow, but they still turned out fine.

I used a long and short stitch, blending three different colors for the petals. I’m still working on figuring out shading, but basically you want the darkest color to be on the part that is under another petal, and the lightest color to be on the part that is on top of another petal.

The little buds were done in a satin stitch, and the leaves in a fishbone stitch. The stems are quite thick, so I did those in a long and short stitch as well.

If you’d like to make one, you can purchase the fabric here. To see my original post that explains this project, go here. Make sure to post your photos to Instagram using #cutesycraftsSAL so we can all see your work!
